Carl Lewis is a botanist, explorer, and educator. He is the Director of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, where he develops programs to teach plant science and sustainability throughout the Miami metro area. Carl led the opening of new labs at Fairchild, which have become the hub of several community wide citizen science programs. The largest of these is the Million Orchid Project, which uses urban Miami landscapes as a living laboratory for rescuing rare orchids. He also established Growing Beyond Earth, a middle and high school program that is teaching STEM while helping NASA grow food in space. Working with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the US Department of Education, he helped open the nation’s first botany-focused high school. Carl received a Ph.D. in Botany from Cornell University, and now advises graduate students at the University of Miami and Florida International University. He has explored tropical rainforests throughout the world, and currently has ongoing research in Southeast Asia.
